The Mariazeller Bürgeralpe is Mariazell's local mountain and a true viewpoint: from 1,267 metres the view reaches far across the foothills of Lower Austria and Styria. The best part is getting there – the modern Bürgeralpe Express takes you straight up from the town centre in comfortable 8-seater cabins. No car, no long journeys.
Summer: WanderWunderWald for families
Just a few steps from the mountain station lies the WanderWunderWald – an adventure land for children:
- Holzknechtland – where children learn through play how hard forestry work once was
- Biberwasser – the play world of Basti the beaver, with ball runs, an eagle's nest, a giant slide, a raft regatta and gold panning
- WALD8erBAHN "Flylinas Hexenflug" – a ride right in the middle of the forest
The summer season usually runs from early May to early November – ideal for a family day out with a short journey.
Winter: skiing & tobogganing
In winter the Bürgeralpe becomes a manageable, family-friendly ski mountain: around 10 slopes totalling some 14 kilometres and descents for every ability. A special highlight is the 2.5-kilometre toboggan run leading from the mountain station to the valley station of the Bürgeralpe Express. In winter the cable car usually operates from 9 am to 4 pm.

From our apartments in the centre you can reach the valley station of the Bürgeralpe Express on foot. That makes the Bürgeralpe perhaps the most convenient excursion and ski mountain of all – up in the morning, a bite to eat at midday, back to the centre in the afternoon.
